GPS module with included active ceramic antenna, intended for positioning, navigation, route logging, time synchronization, and telemetry applications. It is compatible with Arduino UNO, Nano, and Mega boards, as well as ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, or Raspberry Pi Pico, via the UART serial interface at TTL level. The module provides latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, number of satellites, and UTC time in standard NMEA 0183 format, at the default 9600 baud. Power supply is between 3 and 5VDC, which allows direct connection to both 5V boards and 3.3V. The PCB includes a backup battery that preserves the almanac and ephemerides after power loss, so subsequent restarts are much faster than a cold start. Two LEDs indicate operating status: a red one for power presence and a green one that starts blinking when GPS fix is acquired.

The receiver mounted on the board is from the u-blox generation 7 platform, with UBX protocol version 14.00. It supports the GPS, SBAS, GLONASS, and QZSS constellations, but it does not track GPS and GLONASS simultaneously and does not support Galileo. In normal operation the module outputs $GP-type NMEA messages and typically uses 4 to 8 satellites, depending on reception conditions. For applications that require simultaneous multi-constellation reception, $GN-type messages, and a larger number of tracked satellites, we recommend a module with a u-blox M8 receiver or newer. The receiver generation can be checked at any time by the user, directly on the serial port, using the UBX-MON-VER command described in the Usage section.

The 25 x 25 mm active ceramic antenna connects via a u.FL / IPEX connector and can be positioned independently of the board, which helps with mounting in enclosures or on vehicles. The module requires direct line of sight to the sky and does not work properly indoors.

Pinout:

Module pin Function Arduino UNO connection
VCC 3–5 VDC power supply 5V
RX Data input to the module Pin 3 (SoftwareSerial TX)
TX Data output from the module Pin 4 (SoftwareSerial RX)
GND Ground GND

Instructions:

Connect the ceramic antenna to the u.FL connector on the board, pressing gently until the contact is fully seated.

Power the module from the VCC pin with 3 to 5VDC and connect the module GND to the development board GND.

Connect the module TX pin to pin 4 of the development board and the module RX pin to pin 3. Note that in some examples available online these pins are shown reversed.

Install the TinyGPSPlus library from Library Manager. We recommend uninstalling older TinyGPS versions before installation to avoid conflicts.

Upload the test code below and open Serial Monitor at 9600 baud.

Take the module outdoors, with the antenna facing the sky and no obstacles above. Indoors, the module will not get a fix.

Wait for the green LED to start blinking. The first cold fix may take a few minutes. Subsequent fixes are significantly faster thanks to the backup battery.

To check the receiver generation, send the binary sequence B5 62 0A 04 00 00 0E 34 to the module serial port; this represents the UBX-MON-VER command. The response contains the firmware version, protocol version, and list of supported constellations. A PROTVER value of 14.00 indicates the u-blox generation 7 platform.
