This smart IR controller is a compact module designed for DIN rail mounting, based on the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U N16R8 chip and intended for controlling devices via infrared in automation applications. It features 8 independent IR transmission channels, an integrated IR receiver, RS232 and RS485 interfaces for serial communication, as well as GPIO pins for extending functionalities.
The module offers flexible connectivity, supporting WiFi, Ethernet via the W5500 chip, and can be powered directly within the 9-24 VDC range. The board runs KCS v3 firmware and supports auto-discovery for Home Assistant through the MQTT protocol, so no configuration code is required for integration into Home Assistant.
Specifications:
Chip: ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U N16R8
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz + Ethernet (WIZnet W5500)
Power Supply: 9 – 24 VDC
IR: 8 emission channels (IR sender) + 1 receiver (IR receiver)
Interfaces: RS232, RS485
Supported IR Standards: NEC, RC5 (decoded)
Firmware: KCS v3
Development Environments: ESPHome, Arduino IDE, MicroPython, ESP-IDF
PCB Dimensions: 83 x 100 mm
Layout:

| Terminal / Connector | Description |
|---|---|
| DC 9-24V | Power input (screw terminal) |
| IR Sender CH1..CH8 | 8 channels for external IR LEDs (positive and negative) |
| IR Receiver | IR receiver for learning codes from remote controls |
| RS485 (A, B, GND) | Terminal for RS485 communication (Modbus) |
| RS232 (TX, RX) | Terminal for RS232 serial communication |
| 3V3 | 3.3 VDC |
| IO15, IO38, IO39, IO40 | Free GPIOs configurable as digital inputs with pull-up |
| Ethernet | Ethernet port (connect to router or switch) |
| USB-C | Port for programming and power supply (5VDC) |
| RESET / DOWNLOAD Button | Buttons for firmware uploading and reset |
The 8 IR channels operate independently, allowing control of up to 8 different IR devices simultaneously.
Usage:
Setup
Mount the board on a DIN rail or fix it with screws. Connect the 9-24V power supply to the DC terminal, observing polarity. Connect IR emitters to the IR1-IR8 terminals; for long distances (up to 300m), use shielded cable or CAT5. For maximum stability, use the Ethernet port; alternatively, you can connect via Wi-Fi. Ensure that the board and control devices are on the same network.
Firmware
The KCS v3 firmware can be downloaded from the site and uploaded to the board using the USB-C port. After startup, the board will automatically connect to the MQTT broker and will be discovered by Home Assistant.
Code Learning
With the firmware active, use the "LEARN" function from the web interface or MQTT. Place the remote control in front of the IR receiver, press the desired button, and the code will be saved and automatically published as an entity in Home Assistant.
Custom Programming (ESPHome / Arduino)
If you want to use the board with ESPHome, use the yaml configuration file (available here). For Arduino IDE or MicroPython, install support for ESP32-S3 and access the corresponding GPIO pins.
