The NRF24L01 wireless module with external antenna is an efficient solution for long-range wireless communication, suitable for both hobby projects and industrial applications. Equipped with a power amplifier (PA) and a low-noise amplifier (LNA), the module can transmit data over distances of up to 1100 meters in open field, at a transmission rate of 250 kbps. The actual distance depends on the operating environment, interference, and power supply quality.

It operates at 2.4GHz in the ISM band and offers 126 configurable RF channels, making it ideal for wireless networks with multiple nodes.

The module is compatible with Arduino (Uno, Mega, Nano etc.), STM32, ESP32, and any other development platform that provides an SPI interface and 3.3V. voltage. Communication is carried out via the SPI protocol at speeds of up to 10 Mbps, and the transmission rate is programmable: 250 kbps, 1 Mbps, or 2 Mbps.

Output power is also adjustable in four steps: 0, -6, -12, or -18 dBm, allowing power consumption to be optimized depending on the application. The module has four operating modes: off, standby, RX, and TX, and the 20 dB PA gain and 10 dB LNA gain ensure good receiver sensitivity: up to -94 dBm at 250 kbps.

The supply voltage is between 3V and 3.6V, with a maximum current consumption of 115 mA. The compact dimensions of 38 x 16.46 x 0.8 mm make it easy to integrate into any project. The package includes the antenna shown in the image.

The data pins (MOSI, MISO, SCK, CE, CSN) of the NRF24L01 are 5V tolerant on most module variants, so a level shifter is not required for the signal lines when using Arduino. However, for maximum safety, a bidirectional level shifter is recommended in critical applications. 

The NRF24L01 has a current draw that varies sharply during transmission (up to 115 mA), which can cause voltage drops on the power line and lead to unpredictable behavior, resets, or unstable communication.

The standard recommendation is to add the following in parallel with the power supply:

Electrolytic capacitor: 10 µF - 100 µF between VCC and GND, placed as close as possible to the module pins

Ceramic capacitor: 100 nF (0.1 µF) in parallel with the electrolytic one, for filtering high-frequency noise

Both capacitors work together: the electrolytic one provides current reserve during consumption peaks, while the ceramic one filters fast noise on the line.

Usage:

Before connecting, add a 10 µF - 100 µF electrolytic capacitor and a 100 nF (0.1 µF) ceramic capacitor in parallel, between the module’s VCC and GND pins, placed as close as possible to the module. These are essential for power supply stability, because the module can draw up to 115 mA in short bursts during transmission, causing voltage drops without proper filtering.

Connect the module to the development board according to the pinout above. Attention: the module operates strictly at 3.3V, not 5V. Use the board’s 3.3V pin or an external 3.3V LDO voltage regulator (e.g., AMS1117-3.3). The signal pins (MOSI, MISO, SCK, CE, CSN) are generally 5V tolerant, but for critical applications a bidirectional level shifter is recommended.

Install the RF24 library in Arduino IDE (Sketch > Include Library > Manage Libraries > search for "RF24" by TMRh20).

Connect the CE and CSN pins physically to the board’s digital pins (e.g., CE = pin 7, CSN = pin 8 on Arduino Uno).

Configure the RF channel and transmission rate in the code, making sure both modules (transmitter and receiver) use the same settings.

Upload the test code to both boards and open the Serial Monitor to verify communication.

Position the antenna vertically to maximize transmission distance.

In case of interference, change the RF channel to a less crowded area of the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
