The SS12D00G3 mini slide switch is an SPDT (1 pole, 2 positions) switch with three pins, used as a power switch, as a selector between two circuits or as a selector between two operating modes in small electronic devices. The plastic slider is pushed with a fingernail or the tip of a tool and stays fixed in the chosen position. It is suitable for low-voltage DC, in breadboard, printed circuit board or prototype assemblies.

The switch has a metal housing and three pins with a 2.54 mm pitch, so it fits directly into the holes of a breadboard or a standard-pitch test board. The middle pin is the common (COM) and is connected to pin 1 in one slider position and to pin 3 in the other. The switch has no center position. The contacts handle at most 0.5 A at 50 VDC, with a contact resistance of maximum 30 mOhm.

Main features include the slider with two stable positions, long 2.54 mm pitch pins compatible with the breadboard, the metal housing and operation as a simple ON/OFF switch (with COM and a single outer pin) or as an SPDT selector (with COM and both outer pins). The switch is a passive component and does not need its own power supply.

End towards pin 3 COM (pin 2) connected to pin 3, pin 1 free

Usage:

Use the switch only in low-voltage DC circuits, with at most 0.5 A at 50 VDC. Do not use it for mains voltage.

On a breadboard, insert the three pins into three different rows, otherwise the contacts will short-circuit to each other. On a printed circuit board, solder the pins into holes with a 2.54 mm pitch.

Nothing is printed on the switch, so number the pins from one end to the other, with pin 2 (COM) in the middle.

For the SPDT selector function, connect the source to COM and the two circuits to pins 1 and 3. The current flows to the circuit on the side to which you pushed the slider.

For the simple ON/OFF switch function, use COM and a single outer pin. The third pin remains free, and the circuit is closed in one slider position and open in the other.

Push the slider fully to one side or the other. The switch has no center position, and the position stays fixed after you release the slider.

Which position corresponds to pin 1 and which to pin 3 depends on how the switch is placed, so find this out by testing while observing the controlled circuit.

For loads larger than the contact limits, control a relay or a MOSFET transistor, and let the switch provide only the control signal.

For soldering, keep the soldering iron in contact for a short time, because prolonged heat can deform the plastic body of the mechanism.

The SS12D00G3 mini slide switch is a passive SPDT component (1 pole, 2 positions), with 3 pins on a 2.54 mm pitch. It is used as a power on/off switch, as a selector between two circuits or between two operating modes. This tutorial does not use any programmable platform. The circuit is standalone, powered from a holder with 2 AA batteries (3 V), and it does not need any program.

So that the effect of each position is clearly visible, we send the current to one of two LEDs, one red and one green. The slider chooses which of them lights up.

Mini 2-position switch

How it works:

Inside the metal housing, the plastic slider moves a movable contact. The middle pin (2) is the common (COM). In one slider position, COM is connected to pin 1, and in the other it is connected to pin 3. The switch has no center position. Nothing is printed on the body, so number the pins from one end to the other, with pin 2 in the middle.

In the circuit, the battery positive goes to COM. The current reaches either the red LED, through pin 1, or the green LED, through pin 3. Each LED has a 100 Ω resistor in series that limits the current according to the formula I = (U - Vf) / R, where U is the battery voltage, Vf is the voltage drop across the LED and R is the resistance.

For the red LED, with a Vf of about 1.9 V, we get I = (3 V - 1.9 V) / 100 Ω = 11 mA. For the green LED, with a Vf of about 2.1 V, we get I = (3 V - 2.1 V) / 100 Ω = 9 mA. The Vf values are typical for 5 mm LEDs, not measured values. The usual limit of such an LED is 20 mA, so both currents remain safe.

The switch contacts support at most 0.5 A at 50 VDC. It is suitable only for low DC voltages. Do not use it for mains voltage. A larger load is driven with a relay or a MOSFET transistor, and the switch only provides the control signal.

Connection:

Power the circuit only from the holder with 2 AA batteries (3 V), and connect the batteries last, after you have finished the wiring. On the breadboard, the three pins of the switch must go into three different rows. Respect the LED polarity: the long leg is the anode (A), and the short leg, on the flat side of the body, is the cathode (K). The 100 Ω resistors have the color code brown, black, brown, gold.

Product pin Connect to Role
Pin 1 Resistor R1 (100 Ω), then the anode of the red LED Output for the first slider position
Pin 2 (COM) Positive (+) of the battery holder Common input, receives the power
Pin 3 Resistor R2 (100 Ω), then the anode of the green LED Output for the second slider position
Red LED cathode (K) Negative (-) of the battery holder Current return
Green LED cathode (K) Negative (-) of the battery holder Current return

Buttons, adjustments and indicators:

Element What it does How to use it
Slider (2-position SPDT switch) Connects COM (pin 2) either to pin 1 or to pin 3 Push the slider with your fingernail all the way to one side or the other. The position stays fixed after you release the slider.
Red LED Indicates that COM is connected to pin 1 It lights up when the slider is on the pin 1 side and goes off in the other position.
Green LED Indicates that COM is connected to pin 3 It lights up when the slider is on the pin 3 side and goes off in the other position.

Startup: connect the batteries with the slider in either position. Only one LED will light up, because the switch has no center position and both LEDs cannot be lit at the same time.

Checking the positions: push the slider towards one end and note which LED lit up. Then push it towards the other end. The lit LED must change. Which position corresponds to pin 1 and which to pin 3 depends on how the switch is placed on the breadboard, so find this out by testing.

The LEDs show the state of the circuit. If no LED lights up in any position, go to the Common problems section.

Configuration:

The switch has no parameters to set and does not store anything electronically. The slider position is the only state and it is kept mechanically, even if you remove the batteries. You can use it in two ways.

Mode Pins used Result
Selector between two outputs (SPDT) COM and both outer pins The current goes to one of the two outputs, depending on the slider position
Simple ON/OFF switch COM and a single outer pin The circuit is closed in one position and open in the other. The third pin stays free.

For the simple switch mode, remove the resistor and the LED from the pin you do not use. The two-LED assembly in this tutorial uses the selector mode.

Usage example:

Application: a status indicator for a small device powered from 2 AA batteries. The red LED shows the standby mode, and the green LED shows the active mode.

Step 1: insert the switch into the breadboard, with the three pins in three different rows. Step 2: connect pin 2 (COM) to the positive of the battery holder. Step 3: connect pin 1 to R1 of 100 Ω and then to the anode of the red LED. Step 4: connect pin 3 to R2 of 100 Ω and then to the anode of the green LED. Step 5: connect the cathodes of both LEDs to the negative of the battery holder. Step 6: insert the batteries.

Push the slider to the pin 1 side. The red LED must light up, with a current of about 11 mA. Push the slider to the pin 3 side. The red LED goes off, and the green LED lights up, with a current of about 9 mA. If you see these two states, the switch and the circuit work correctly.

Common problems:

No LED lights up. The usual cause is reversed LED polarity or a poor battery contact. Check that the long leg of each LED goes towards the resistor and the short leg goes to negative, then check the battery holder.

Only one LED lights up, regardless of the slider position. Probably two pins of the switch are in the same row of the breadboard, or one LED is not connected correctly. Check that pins 1, 2 and 3 are in different rows and that both LEDs have the cathode at negative.

Both LEDs light weakly or flicker on and off. The pin contact in the breadboard is poor, or the batteries are nearly discharged. Push the pins more firmly into the holes or replace the batteries.

The slider feels stiff or does not reach the end. Push it with an even pressure, along the axis of movement, without forcing it sideways, so you do not deform the mechanism.

Limitations and tips:

The switch accepts at most 0.5 A at 50 VDC. It is intended for signal circuits and small DC loads, not for mains voltage. For larger loads, use a relay or a MOSFET controlled by the switch.

It has no center position and no mechanical panel mounting, so it is mounted on a PCB or on a breadboard. The position stays fixed without power.

After this assembly you can use the switch as a general power switch for a small 3 V device, as a selector between two circuits, or as a selector for an operating mode.
