The DC 5840-31ZY motor is a worm gear motor designed for applications that require high torque at low speed and stable positioning without power. The 670:1 reduction ratio transforms the rotor’s high speed into a slow, powerful motion, with 12 RPM no-load and approximately 9 RPM under load, and a maximum torque of 70 kg/cm. The worm-and-wheel construction provides a self-locking function, meaning the shaft cannot be turned externally when the motor is not powered, an important advantage for barriers, shutters, lifting mechanisms, robotic arms, turntables, and any mechanism that must keep its position in the absence of current.
The metal housing, the 8mm diameter shaft with a usable length of 15.5mm, and the total height of 114mm make it suitable for mounting in real mechanical structures, while the 350g weight keeps the assembly compact. Power supply is 12VDC, no-load current is only 0.3A, and stall current reaches 6.5A, a value that must be taken into account when sizing the power supply and driver.
The direction of rotation is reversed by swapping the supply polarity, and speed can be adjusted via PWM at low frequencies.
Attention:
The gear in contact with the worm gear is made of bronze. Continuous use at maximum load leads to premature wear of the gear. The indicated specifications are maximum values, not continuous operating values. The bronze gear is the wear part of the assembly and is designed to fail first, protecting the motor and the steel worm. Its wear resulting from operation at high load, in continuous duty or with shocks and repeated direction reversals does not constitute a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty.
